In ‘meet the team’ you will get to know all Raw Stadia team members. Next up: Matthew Cunnington, transitioning from professional football to sales. Matty is passionate about sports performance and cracking up a joke every time he gets the chance. Let's quick-fire some questions.
Can you tell us a little about your background, and what brought you to join our team?
I played for a professional football club in England for 2 years before being shipped off to university to study sports science. After this, I fell into sales and worked in business development in medical devices for large global companies. I joined Raw Stadia after seeing genuine passion for the product from Reece and Jan and thought it would be a brilliant journey to be part of.
What excites you the most about your role here?
It's the combination of working in niche areas of professional sports and alongside the industries best across multiple departments. Understanding the club's unique situations, how surface data affects performance departments and meeting passionate grounds managers.
Are there any specific challenges or opportunities within your role that you're looking forward to tackling?
There are some huge opportunities coming up this year, in particular working alongside brilliant grounds managers, and supporting their plans to continue to innovate with data and push the boundaries of playing surfaces. This is fun and very rewarding. At the opposite of the spectrum, there are a few EFL league clubs we're very close to finalising working with and this will be brilliant as well.
What are some of your key strengths or areas of expertise that you bring to the team?
Wow, that's a tough one. It's going to sound awful, but I'm a relationship builder. A "solution-based salesperson" as they'd say. I like to deeply understand customers needs, what challenges they face and how we can help them.
Do you have any previous experience or projects that you're particularly proud of and would like to share with us?
I'm honestly proud of everything we've accomplished during my first year, I would probably say the Coventry City project. To have been part of the first EFL Championship club and signing up fully for the system was brilliant.
Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies or interests?
Collecting signed photos and memorabilia from Reece Watson! (inside joke)
Lastly, do you have any fun facts or anecdotes you'd like to share with your new colleagues?
I have many stories that involve my new colleagues. Mostly regarding our Full-Time Testing Consultant, Sammy Mac. But luckily for him, at the Christmas party, he made me sign a non-disclosure, so I cannot tell you any information.
